Genitive in German and English

I think it olden times, in English possessives did not employ the apostrophe.  Perhaps it came into usage to distinguish it from simple plurals?  One exception still in use is "its" for possessive and "it's" as a contraction for "it is".

I did not know that there was an acceptable use of apostrophe for possessive in German (i.e., Roppelt's).  I always thought it was slang.
