Thanks Fred, never fail to be amazed by the depth of your knowledge!  I was led to understand that the dilution process was used by Courage in the later days of using the old George's Brewery in Bristol before the S & N takeover.  Director's was originally brewed for the directors of the Alton Brewery in Hampshire, whereas BA was an original George's brew (known locally as 'Boy's Bitter').  I think that the Best Bitter was originally a Courage London product.  I was never a fan of it when I lived in London, though Director's was an excellent drink but hard to get in its early public days.  It certainly changed when it was brewed in Bristol; don't know what the Charles Wells' manifestation of Best tastes like.
