UNESCO - Interesting fact

I was talking to a friend of who is Bamberg born and brewed and who is very very knowledgable about the history of the city, in addition being a student of historical architecture, and he told me something that I never knew about Bamberg and I suspect not many on the forum do either (at a guess).

The reason Bamberg was awarded UNESCO Heritage status has got nothing to do with the old buildngs or war time lack of damage but actually all about the Gartenstadt. The area around the back of Faessla stretching to the Ottokirche (approx), plus other areas of the city continue a rare tradition that originates from medieval times of keeping large parts of a city to be used for growing produce and exporting. Clearly the marketing of Bamberg's UNESCO status has branched out (pardon the pun) to other monuments, probably because they appeal more readily to tourism than gardens.

In fact, in the 1970s (I think) the Council authorised a 4 lane carriageway straight through the Gartenstadt and into the centre of the City. It was only the protests of the city farmers that prevented this atrocity being carried out.
