I really don't think Pugsley & Austin did much out west, which is why I referred to east of the rust belt. But I could be wrong. I just don't recall *any* Ringwood (*) breweries or brewpubs in the west, it was always talked about as a New England thing. I haven't read your Guardian link yet, nor did I catch where Mark said they were a big influence outside the NE.

I'd had Geary's and a couple other bottled Ringwood beers from NE in the 90's, and they put me right off the yeast, as they were very butterscotchy and gym-socky. It was interesting, then to try some actual English Ringwood beer a few years ago, I believe owned by Marston's. It was much cleaner. Ringwood Fortyniner and one or two others. Nothing gymsocky about them at all.

(* Pugsley's systems supposedly used Ringwood yeast...I don't mean beers brewed at Ringwood in Blighty.)
