I hadn't really considered that the slightly smoky character of Schlenkerla Helles coming from the yeast but then after doing some google searching I see homebrewers claiming that if they re-pitch yeast from a batch that was made from smoked malt into a new batch of lager not using a smoked malt that it does impart a slightly smoky character.  I haven't tried that myself but I can see how that can happen and makes for a plausible explanation.
