I've never heard of anything like this in the UK, but that doesn't mean it didn't exist. There could be a huge number of reasons why, from laws to taxation and building types (cold cellar) to the fact that ale wouldn't benefit much from being moved about I guess. Ale does need more tlc and we(?) are a nation of pub goers rather than bottled beer drinkers. Just a few thoughts. Regarding your second question, I don't really know, but I would point out that there were and still are many communal breweries in Franconia. They are much less known than their Oberpfälzer cousins due to the fact it's mainly private. This is as much down to taxation as much as anything I guess. i don't think it would be difficult to have your own yeast culture - obviously a lot of home brewers do this. It would of course add another layer of complexity to the finished product and is a great way to 'brew' without having to buy all the equipment etc. |
