Point is Andrew, and you may well be right by the way, but from the German perspective, the measures used in late March/April and early May were intended not to stop the virus, but to slow it down. To allow control to be gained. Control means, resuming largely normal life but 'keeping a finger on the pulse' so that anywhere with spike infections can be monitored and, where necessary, shut down. Plus of course use of masks and distancing. I've read lately in the British media how German virus cases have soared and that the R rate is now at 2.8... failing to acknowledge that this is down to 2-3 areas of significant infection confined mainly to meat 'factories'. Examples of Schadenfreude that I find pathetic, but I guess expected. Opening up will cause spikes, but we know much more than we did 3-4 months ago. I'm more worried about winter when people will move inside. The options for control shrink considerably during the colder months. The German health system is one of the best in the world, and contributed significantly to how well the initial phase was handled. Anyway, hope you're well! |
