I was in Franconia exactly one year ago and so tonight I did a tasting of three Franconian-style Kellerbiers from New England breweries that were released this summer. Drinking alone in my backyard Bierkeller in Massachusetts isn't quite the same as being in Franconia, but it beats being home alone not drinking any beer! The beers: Notch (Salem, Massachusetts) Ungespundet Kellerbier 4.5% ABV Fox Farm (Salem, Connecticut) Föhn Franconian-style Kellerbier 5.6% ABV Jack's Abby (Framingham, MA) Franconian Kraft Kellerbier 12 Plato, 4.8% ABV, 35 IBU Notch has a full-on decoction brewery that focuses more on Czech styles but does solid releases of German beers. Jack's Abby is a 100% lager brewery and has a lovely beerhall with long communal tables and takes German brewing tradition very seriously. Fox Farm brews a wider variety of beers but is turning out to be one of the best overall breweries in New England. All three were very solid and süffig. The Fox Farm was thea little more dry and flavorful, but with a higher ABV that is understandable. I think any of the three would be well received in Franconia. |
