According to the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), emissions associated with animal husbandry add 7.1 gigatonnes of CO2/year to the environment or 14.5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.

I'm not sure where the 'properly ranched cattle' are in Germany?  As you know, before this year, we travelled several times a year from the Allgau to Franken, a train journey of over 300 kms.  Allgau is one of the main centres of dairy production in Germany but we never saw a single cow, nor anywhere along the line!  Coming from a country (Ireland) where we were literally surrounded by cattle, we kept asking ourselves 'Where are all the cows?'

Then, one year while walking around the hills of the Oberpfalz, we discovered the answer: they are all in sheds!  We talked to people about this and they confirmed that, as is happening in many other countries, the growing trend is to raise cattle (and other animals) indoors and keep the land for growing crops, including, of course, animal feedstuffs.

Yes, das Volk is cost-conscious!
