Each to their own and all that but I would never move to the UK from here. And that has nothing to do with beer. Sheffield is one city I used to visit a lot for pub crawls in my Uni days. Back then I lived in Nottingham so it didn't bother me but going back once I'd moved back to Jersey I found the cities of the UK generally depressing. The standard of livng, litter, filth, council housing, poverty and general depravity of Sheffield, a city that has suffered from declining steel industry and depressed wages for decades, just doesn't do it for me. And it's not even one of the worst - it's improved a lot economically since I last visited. The weather just adds to the gloom though Yes the Yorkshire moors are beautiful (my mother was born the other side of the Pennines so it's a place I know well). Yes there are lots of pubs in Sheffield but at least in my many visits I felt they were too obsessed with competing with Notts and Norwich etc by having too many *new* breweries that couldn't brew for toffee and generally too many real ales on draft. Ticker obsessed in other words. Every time I went with renewed optimism but left with the same feeling of disappointment. I of course mean no disrespect to those people who live in the UK, nor suggest that my feelings are true reflections of reality (certainly there are many beautiful areas as well, outside the cities) but I'm only writing from my own experience. Nick you have your own experiences and clearly have a love for the UK I no longer share. Being brought up in an island paradise (clean, no poverty, no crime, bright weather, beaches, high income etc) and now living in Bamberg (clean, little poverty, little crime, good weather for 9 months overall, high standard of living, highly educated and civilised society etc) I'm just not able to appreciate the UK any more. I'm visiting the Black Country in a month and can't wait to drown in Batham's Bitter but I'm not looking forward to the whole 'UK experience'. I may have to wander round central Birmingham - I hope I'm proved wrong but I'm expecting some reverse culture shock. That said the West Midlanders can be a friendly bunch and I can't wait to go into a good pub and leave my judgements at the door. |
