Funnily enough a German native (from Hamburg) asked me why (certain) Franconians use the work Kerwa to describe the more typical Kirchweih festivals - in other words why 'e' and not 'i'. Intrigued, I asked a Franconian friend and he said it was becuase in certain parts of Franconia (especially around Bamberg) it came from the old word 'keren' which means to make a loud noise (like at a fest). Interestingly, others have said that keren is what some Franconians cal the Church. Perhaps Juergen can shed some light on this. |
