But not lots of non-meat from what I remember. Nick, I think that you misunderstand us poor Britains (much nicer than horrible Brits) and pubs and food. The town pub in Britain has had a totally different historic role than in Germany, the USA and elsewhere. It was not, for the last couple of hundred years, a tavern or an inn, with the role of providing refreshment and accommodation, but a place of recreation, where you went to drink and play darts, cards, etc. Eating was for home. In the last 30 years, many pubs have adopted the drinking and eating role because their clientele of (mainly) male drinkers has been led astray by other attractions, like helping bring up the kids, ferrying them hither and thither, shopping, etc. - all somewhat dubious attractions to my mind! This has meant that it has been necessary for them to branch out into providing food, play areas for children, etc. On top of this, the somewhat tardy emancipation of the female sex has seen them venture into unknown territory, such as pub vaults (bars or saloons), where, hitherto, the only female would be a (usually) elderly barmaid. You might not be surprised to learn that, in my company, J was early pioneer in this movement, when her requests for gin and orange usually led to a half of mild. I became enlightened in later years, with the half becoming a pint. Some German pubs suggest to me that they also enjoyed the British role as drinking hiuses rather than inns. |
