I suppose they won it because the judges liked it, in the same way that they liked that deplorable concoction the following year. Just goes to show, as I think we've all agreed on this forum, that it's all a question of personal taste. I'm continually fascinated watching people in the Bay Hop. Last night, there were four choices: a stout, a 'summer' beer, something made with wheat and a standard sort of modern bitter (4,5%, malty). Us oldies were kind of working our way through the four, when two younger people came in, totally ignored all the draught beers and chose two cans of I know not what! Incidentally, the draught beer is going up from £3 on a sliding scale depending on gravity but with a discount for Camra members and regulars. Chris says that the £3 was meant as an introductory offer, which he has kept going for as long as possible. It means his prices are more or less in line with other locals but a lot more than Spoons across the road. We'll see what happens. On the nature of capitalism, yes, the brewing industry is like every other type of business. In fact, historically, brewing has represented many of the worst aspects of capitalist society: cheap, shoddy products, poor working practices and working conditions, and extremely greedy owners. So, probably better not to mourn the demise of another business. Harking back to my early drinking days, there was some stuff that was really awful and I think that, generally, the standard is much improved; it does seem a lot more expensive to drink beer nowadays but I haven't really analysed it that closely. |
