Don't mind a bit of responding, a welcome break between disposing of the rubbish and shopping! Regarding new brewing directions in Europe: I'm not sure that I see any that are especially beneficial. Personally, I am as interested in the social aspects of beer drinking, as in brewing techniques. per se, although they are of interest in a technical sense. But I gladly accept that others are. As I say, there's nothing to stop him following such interests in the way that many of us do by experimenting with different brews and even working with other brewers but that does not seem to be behind his activities, which seem more directed at expanding the Mahrs' empire. Incidentally, there are a good number of others who are attempting the experiment with 'proper' lagers in the UK. Locally, for example, we have Geipel, which I tried for our friend Jeff. It was not really to my taste, being, IMHO, a pale shadow of the beers that it tried to emulate but I believe that the chaps who brew it are sincere in their admiration for Bavarian lagers and it certainly is not an attempt to grow rich on an unsuspecting public! I'm not going to comment on whether capitalism is neccessarily evil, as I think most people know my views on that subject now. But, I would say that, like all human endeavour, it has its benefits, including Ryanair (who are no more evil than the rest of the airline industry - certainly not as bad as United!) allowing me to travel to Bavaria cheaply. And they certainly haven't ruined European tourism - their activities are relatively small-scale when compared to tourism in general. I think AirBnB is a different kettle of whatsit - not so much by its effect on tourism but the way that it is distorting the supply of accommodation, especially in places of great shortage like London. Actually, the greatest threat to Bamberg seems to be the big river cruise lines and mass coach travel, which don't contribute a lot tot he City, other than crowds. |
