The real savings comes from lagering-- if the beer is twice the strength you can lager twice as much end product with the same volume of tanks. I don't know all the states current laws, but there was such a thing as "3.2 beer" (4% abv = 3.2% abw) that was required in some states in some situations. In those cases they just diluted the high gravity beer to 4% abv rather than to the more usual 5% abv. Looks like Wikipedia says this is still found in Utah, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Kansas... |
