Well, that's a satisfactory conclusion, we're both right!  But, from what I can see, it is a bit more than an indirect influence.   Reading a few of the sites on the net, it seems to me that there was actually two craft beer movements, one in the east and one in the west, which seem to have coalesced into the craft beer movement we have today.  How they have interacted is probably the key to understanding the rapid growth of micro's. combined with the ease of marketing provided by the net.
