There are 2 merkendorfs, the slightly bigger one being outside of Nürnberg. 

I would throw in Dörfleins, it's one of the best breweries in the region and easy to reach from bamberg by bus. For bus times the Deutsche Bahn Website does the job as well as the VGN website. As you have seen be sure to enter the correct village.
