Cans. That's how beer from the new Stone Brewing in Berlin shows up down here. I don't have a problem with the taste of canned beer as in, whether it tastes different to bottled beer or not. At least, with beer that is free of sediment -- filtered or lagered. Or Hefeweizen. The big problem I DO have with canned beer is that you can't see if it is settled or not before opening. Like a bottle-conditioned ale: you don't open it if the sediment isn't settled on the bottom, and then you pour it carefully, to leave the sediment in the bottle, not in your glass. You can't do this with canned beer. And I think opening a can is a more "violent" action than opening a bottle, stirring up the carbonation and subsequently any sediment. So, bottom line, the arguments for canning are agreeable, but only for clear beer or beer that should be drunk with a sediment stirred in like Hefeweizen or Belgium^H^Han wit. I'm agnostic on the environmental issues arguing for or against it compared to bottling. |
