Hi Rick - I think I was a bit harsh in rejecting your news, you're right to blame the brewers in Britain for jumping on the bandwagon. It seems to me that, particularly, the new brewers in the UK can't wait to find their feet and establish themselves before branching out into the ever more esoteric. If it's not IPA, it's some odd concoction, with all sorts of strange ingredients and tastes. Now it's caught on in Ireland, with even Aldi stocking a mindblowing selection of Irish-brewed IPA's - 17 different ones last week, in a store where, previously, you'd be lucky to find one decent ale. If I see a bottle-conditioned one, I give it a go and, mostly, they are ok. But it would be lovely to see someone producing good quality straight forward mild and bitters. I don't suppose that the US-beer style invasion will really affect the Franken market too much; Gold Ochsenbrauerei will still continue their single beer policy, though some of the places that produce a wide selection, such as our great favourites in Merkendorf, may be heading in that direction. |
