Diacetyl is British Ales

Right. It's a pleasant, buttery sort, not nasty or off-putting at all. Now, I can't think of a particularly butterscotchy (or even buttery) FranconiaN beer aside from Buttenheimer Löwenbräu Kellerbier, but it varies. For a few years following the Great Hops Price Increase of 2007 or so, it was like apples bronzed in butter.
