If you are an Android user you probably already have the "free sms" app from Google: Hangouts. Or install Viber which works like Skype without the Microsoft connection - free international calls, video calls and messaging. Viber uses your mobile/cell/handy number for id, no need for silly aliases like Skype. For both Hangouts and Viber you need to be connected to the interweb, of course.
