I would say plastic lining would make using much more expensive wooden barrels a bit of a waste of time, though I'm not exactly sure of the situation. I know that Pilsner Urquell used to have a very large operation of burning out the used pitch and repitching each of their huge barrrels they used to ferment the beer in - I think each time they were used. Perhaps this isn't the case with the likes of Schlenkerla because the barrels aren't used to ferment the beer in. 

I was at Schlenkerla bockbieranstich last night and it was good - though there was a discerable difference in the beer poured outside (plastic barrels) and inside (wood). Inside the beer had much better head retention and was smoother (i.e. not as gassy, though with a lovely head). It's possible that this was a freshly tapped cask vs a near empty one but the difference was stark (pun intended).

Tonight is Keeemann and tomorrow Sonne in Bischberg. I will be at both.
