Brauerei Meusel et al

Given that beery news has been light on the ground over the past few weeks I thought I'd just note some recent observations.

On Wednesday I took the bike to Buttenheim and after a rather disappointing kellerbier in the Lowenbrau Keller (used to be one of my favorite beers, not sure what's happened, to me or the beer) I cycled to Drugendorf via Dreuchsendorf. I have visited Brauerei Meusel a few years ago to buy bottles but I'm still amazed that this place both exists so quietly, produces such a large range of beers and employs such a number of people. For anyone that wishes to go and buy bottles, the procedure is to go through the brewery yard to the office, make your order and pay and then take the receipt to the bottling warehouse where someone will see to your order. Half of the 15 available were 'normal' beers like hell, pils, Keller, weizen etc. However they also had bock (dunkel, hell and sommer) a rauchbier called Büchla with beech smoked malt, another rauchbier called Bamberger which is dark, a sommerbier (schwarz) and a Coburger Art beer which I think is a hoppy (contextually) helles. I have had a few of my purchases and they were excellent.

This brewery has no website, no wholesale and I've never seen its beers on draft - though they do supply it barreled. The prices are quite ridiculous, for a case of the kellerbier one is talking 52c a bottle or for the Doppelbock 67c a bottle. I enjoyed the beers I bought the first time I visited so this may be a regular occurrence - I really need a car!

I then went onto Drugendorf and Brauerei Forst. The Alt Frankischer Lagerbier was outstanding, one of the best beers I've had. I've been here a few times before and never been so enthused as far as I remember, though I've always held the beer(s) in high regard. I think 3 disappeared within the hour. Then I remembered I had to cycle. The opening hours are odd, Sunday - Wednesday from 4pm. I shall be back.

One can also visit Pfister in Wiegelshofen and the former Schwarzes Kreuzberg Keller in Eggolsheim which has Greif Hell and Krug Lager on tap.
