| I wonder how well known the difference is between Czech Pils and German Pils out there in the wider beer-drinking population. Take two widely-known northern German examples, Jever and Flensburger, compared to the original Pilsner, from Pilsen, Pilsner Urquell. Compare and contrast. I swear that Jever is as *bitter* as it used to be, but it is not as *hoppy* as it used to be. I know others who would know better than me that say the same thing. I don't have as long a history with Flensburger, so I don't know if it's been dumbed down/cheapened over the years & decades. But that's a different topic. And how old is the tradition of brewing Pils in Franconia, anyway? IIRC, it's a relatively new phenomenon. Did Jürgen's Oma & Opa drink Pils? Is it not something Franconian / fränkische brewers started brewing for the strangers who started showing up after the Iron Curtain fell? |
