Couple of visits

Once more out and about! Friday, we visited the newish brewery Binkert in Breitengussbach. Nick suggested 'americanesque' but more like simply new and making interesting use of an industrial unit. As jason remarked, it is kind of nice to watch the workings of the brewery while you sample its products.

When we arrived, Jason was well into a kellerbier, so we tried a couple. Nothing sensational but pleasant enough, quite malty. The small drinking area soon became quite full, a good crowd for early afternoon, including three delivery men from nearby Wagner! J wasn' really mad on the kellerbier, so we tried the Dunkles - again, quite aacceptable, if without real distinction. Gerhard had warned that we were a day too early for the launch of the new co-operatively produced Bock and, in spite of Jason's earnest pleadings (and shameless name dropping) with the brewer, he refused us even the merest sip.

There was nothing to do but to cut our  losses and take the short stroll to Kemmern. Who should be sitting outside enjoying the sun but Fred and Frank Wetzel. Again a kellerb was ordered, which I found as good as usual but J was not happy, so a Pils/Helles was ordered as a replacement. Fred, Frank and Jason cycled off for pastures new, while we moved inside, as it was getting a bit chilly, and ordered a couple of Schwarzbiers. At last, satisfaction for J!

Saturday was a lovely day, just right for a walk across the fields to Pferdsfeld. Jason was already into a Vollbier (or two) when we arrived. I'm sure that I don't have to tell anyone how good the beer is at this most rustic of breweries, suffice to say that it was on good form. One little incident to note: having got used to most places now listing a 'schnitt' on their cards, and charging a little extra for it (but usually getting that back in a nearly full Seidla!), we were a bit surprised when the lady serving us explained that asking for a second Schnitt was not normally done. She was very pleasant and friendly and was really giving us advice, not telling us off, and the second Schnitt was produced with a smile. In a way, it is nice to see that Leicht retains so much of the old way of doing things. So much so, that we were only charged the price of a half of a Seidla (viz. E 1,10) for each Schnit. 

Onto Sunday and a probable visit to Schenkerla.
