The average tip in Germany is 7% in restaurants and pubs. The staff get - included in the prices - around 10% of the sales or they are paid per hour (minimla wage 8.50 € or more) or a mix). So the average american tip in the US (maybe 15 to 20%) is too much in Germany. No tip is necessary (or only in special circumstances) if You pay at a counter (supermarkets, fast food chains, beer festivals etc.) If the service is lousy You can renounce a tip. But it's better to say why the service was bad. In Germany we have so many guests, who give in principle no tip, so the staff don't understand the reasons for Your behavior. If You have to pay 17 Euro, but You want to give only 1 € tip, You can give a 20 € note and say:"Bitte geben Sie mir auf 18 Euro heraus" or "18 Euro, bitte". So You get 2 € back. If You give 20 € and say "Bitte schön", the staff takes 3 € as tip. |
