So who will be in Bamberg on April 23?

I read a great piece by Jeff Alworth on that whole 1516 sentence-within-the-pricing-rules decree and the matter of yeast. It turns out that they actually knew, in a way, what yeast was. No, they didn't know that it was a bunch of tiny single-cell organisms, but they actually had more of a clue than most of us give them credit for. Ask Matthias Trum at Schlenkerla some time. Learn about what a 'Hefener' did (no, he didn't publish girlie magazines). The reason the rule doesn't mention yeast is because it was assumed that yeast went into and back out of the beer - it didn't remain in like the other ingredients.

Never mind that the rule was also modified within just a few years to re-allow other flavoring spices besides hops, and never mind that the current set dates from 1993. And never mind that the word "Reinheit" was never mentioned in the 1516 decree, or that in the context of the rest of the decree, it was much more about pricing and money and the producer, not the consumer, of _lager_ beers.

I'll go "impure" on the 23rd. Or "pure." Like a beer with lots of diacetyl. It's "pure."

I think we'll all be drinking what we like on the 23rd, nicht wahr? Just like any other day.

And today, 7th April, is "National Beer Day" but only in the USA.
