Not the first brewpub in Bamberg

You are right, Jim.

Both are - I guess for the Erlkönig looking at their beer menu - in the tradition of the typical German microbreweries. The first (?) has been the Brauhaus Vetter in Heidelberg, opened 1987.  A video about Vetter:

Typically they brew a pale lager or pils, an amber lager, a wheat beer and some saisonal beers, p.e. bocks All not filtered, because they have no filtery and the guests like unfiltered beers. You can buy hand filled big bottles or syphons. Sometimes they offer bottles - so the Ambräusianum, contract filled.

The difference to american brewpubs is not only the small beer menu, but also that they don't tap beers and/or offer bottles from other breweries .The Lieblingsbier in Bayreuth and the Altes Mädchen in Hamburg are american brewpubs in so far. The Sieben Stern in Vienna (opened 1993) is one of the first examples of brewpubs/brewrestaurants that have expand their beer menu with many "experimental" beer styles, p.e. Bamberg-style smoke beer etc.

But it's possible that the Erlkönig will in the future also brew more different beerstyles. They get tips and advice from the malthouse Weyermann.

A difference between Ambräusianum and Erlkönig is the target group. The Ambräusianum benefits from its location on the tourist crowds (similiar to Vetter in Heidelberg). So they have traditional local food. The Erlkönig is near the new Campus Erba-Insel with many students. I think they want to get more younger guests. The food menu is similiar with the Zapfhahn and the Lieblingsbier in Bayreuth. The Erlkönig is easily accessible for motorists in contrast to the Zapfhahn and the Ambräusianum.
