Irrespective of symantics, I paid a visit to Erlkönig last night. The beers were solid, 2 amber lagers, a pale ale, a smoked lager and a couple of others I can't recall. The food looked good. However, I believe the location of this place is what will kill it, along with the prices. Students aren't affluent, they cant afford to go out and eat every night. Tourists spend money but they won't venture out to gaustadt unless they are beer fans. €3.40 for an amber lager is too much so will isolate the locals who have Sonne in Bischberg up the road. They need to offer a house beer for a lot less in Bambergs suberbs at the very least. Like I said the beers were solid, the amber lager 1.0 was something akin to Mahrs U (the original and best I can get in Mahrs). The pale ale wasn't hoppy enough but was pleasant. But whilst I may visit occasionally it's not going to draw me back regularly. Incidentily I learned that it was setup by the son of the Kaiserdom brewery family. They gave him some money to play with. Make of that what you will. |
