Conversely, I should ask our native German speaking friends whether they find English difficult because of the simplified grammer? OTOH? Re US/Alabamah English: you are probably right Nick, I find much of US-'English' increasingly difficult to follow, as I do quite a lot of English-English, particularly those strains heavily influenced by contemporary music (rap and the like). It is interesting to watch US films from the 1930s/40s (which I do quite a lot). Many of the actors speak in quite 'cut-glass' English accents, even those in the low-budget 'film-noir' classics. I would guess that spoken English will be quite different in 50 years time, both in Britain and the USA, as the mass media has such an effect on daily usage. Hope that this discussion is within the spirit of the Forum - it's one that crops up from time to time and interests me because of my background in English studies. |
