Good, back to basics.

I often wonder how languages develop.  It's not so difficult to understand why they get simplified and change over time and contact with other languages but why do they start so complicated?  Language is all about concepts and thought processes, so why did early people need such complex structures to communicate?  I don't know anything about the languages of people who are in the same stage of social development as say the British or Germans a couple of thousand years ago (maybe some of those tribes in the Amazon?).  Do they have complex structures or are they relatively simple?
