Transport issues and Bockbieranstich bei Kathi Brau

For what it's worth, I have hired cars with friends and driven 2 or even 3 days in a week long visit. We would take turns driving each day and I'll admit to drinking a small beer or 3 in a long day (the principles of which are for another discussion). It's what has allowed me to visit over 150 breweries in Franconia; not something that makes me somehow proud, merely informed. Now I'm a bit more mature  (31) and somewhat less inclined to bomb around necking siedlas like they're going out of fashion as I once did, plus the fact I now live in Bamberg, I am more than happy to cherry pick. As I have said often enough the experience of the gasthof or bierkeller is the dominating sensual stimulant these days and a good beer is the accompaniment not the main event.

So I can see all sides. Especially the problem of getting to some very good places. Whilst many breweries are easily accessible by public transport others are certainly not, as we all know. For example, I wanted to go cycling to Aufseß last weekend and as you will all know this is a tough cycle up into the Frankische Schweiz. After a bus to koningsfeld I cycled to sachsendorf, then Hochstahl (brauerei Reichold is probably one of the best breweries anywhere, not just here) and finally Kathi brau. I would have ventured into aufseß but it was bockbieranstich in Kathi and as you can imagine I wasn't leaving that event early - it was awesome. To link in my point earlier about the beer here being secondary in many ways, the Kathi dunkel is at best a thirst quencher, at worst a thin rather watery beer which I wouldn't enjoy in my living room. However at the brewery, with a band playing and a packed house enjoying themselves it went down like a dream. The bock was something else... Really excellent (or was it?). Not to go too off topic but this is why 'rating' beers is fraught with inconsistencies (again a topic for another day).

It took me 1hr30 mins to cycle to Forchheim and get on the last S bahn bus to Bamberg at 1.40am. It was a tough cycle but a great day. What's the moral of the story? I'm not really sure. I could have driven... Yet I would have had much less fun and being limited to a half or two in Reichold would have been downright hellish. Yet I probably shouldn't have cycled home. I guess one does what one can to try new things.

Incidentally I did get offered a couch for the night with a friendly Kathi regular (who also paid for my beers and food) but I needed my bed. Another example of Franconian hospitality par excellence.
