Interesting Andy; that's the sort of preparation that I would expect every new brewer to make, very thorough. I wonder about some the new micro's or is it just that the standard of publicans that has declined. When we joined Imperial Inns & Taverns (managed arm of Courage Brewery) as trainee managers, we first went on a week's training course, then spent 3 months in a pub (The Vine in Winchester) with a training manager. After that, we went on the relief circuit (managed about 8 pubs in the south-west) before we were even allowed to apply for our own pub. We joined Jan 1 and didn't take over a pub of our own until August. Do publicans get that level of training and experience today? Oh, and bear in mind that I had worked as a barman for some years before that, including changing barrels, managing tank beers, etc., etc. |
