"I can only put it down to sheer laziness and incompetence." Oh c'mon Barry get a grip. Look I get and share your love of all things traditional when it come to beer but to call people lazy and incompetent for this reason is way over the top and really not called for. Firstly using Oatmeal as part of the grain bill is originally an English thing and nothing new. Sam Smith has had brewed an oatmeal stout fo a long time and it's quite good. Using flaked oats (in small doses btw) as part of the grain bill can add a nice silky smoothness to a stout. I've used coffee in some homebrews in the past and when not overdone can add a nice additonal flavor to the beer. It's not lazy to add it to a beer. In fact it adds an additional step or two to the process if anything. The underlying grain bill is till the same as most other stouts and porters I've brewed. As far as adding syrup. Well I know some families in northern New England that live, where making maple syrup is part of the local history, that make homebrewed beer using maple syrup every spring. Hey if you don't like this sort of thing and don't want to drink or brew beers like this then fair play to you. But why the need to hurl an insult at those that do indulge in such things occasionally? |
