Adventures in Zoigl Country - Also question Re: Wolfram Stub'n

Yes, it is politics, I'm afraid.  Wolfram quit the Kommunbrauhaus some years ago - I believe the disagreement was over its modernisation, with W. in favour and some others against (that's how I understand it anyway).  Since then, there has been a grudging acceptance of them - essentially, they filled a hole in the calendar.  Knowing my love of the Zoigl tradition, I've often been encouraged to try to open a Zoiglstube, which I would have been tempted to do, if we were 20 years younger!  Simply, there aren't enough Stube to cope with demand.  Really, there needs to be 2 open every weekend and, as it stands, there are many weekends with only 1 open - if it's Roud'n, for example, it's just too small (probably why Anton was keen on me starting my own!).  Two years ago, they added Weisse Schwann to the calendar but this was not a success, as everyone knows that it is a hotel and not a Zoiglstube.

A few years ago, the Stube in the 5 Zoigl towns tried to get protected status for Zoigl but failed because it is hard to define as a unique product.  So, they opted to trademark the title 'Echte Zoigl', you'll see the green sign on most of the Stube.  However, some owners refuse to pay the requisite fees, so this marketing ploy is stumbling along.  But, anyway, if you go to www.http://zoiglbier.de/, this is the official site for Echte Zoigl and, of course, W. can;t belong, and thus be on the calendar, because it is not brewed in a Kommunbrauhaus.  However, the Zoigl served at the Oberpfalz Hof and Weisse Schwann is - by Robby Binner, who interestingly, brews for Fiedlschneider, which Jason preferred to Binner's own!  Strange, I always found it the other way round - it's all down to personal taste, I suppose.

But, in the end, it's all down to small town politics and is not going to change anytime soon.  I just hope that it can all maintain itself because most of the Zoiglstube are run by older folk and most of their offspring are not that interested in taking over, complicated by the fact that the Stube are usually part of the dwelling house.

Anyone interested in starting a Zoiglstube?  I can give you endless introductions!
