Yeah. I knew this would lead to misunderstandings. Jason, Barry, Mark, Mike, I think everybody on the board knows I'm a lover of malty beers. So, yes, Spielbacher Spezial Hell is one of my favourites, as was Schwarzes Kreuz before its closure or still are the beers from Michelbach, Dietzhof, Frauendorf, Steinfeld etc. But in this case I felt there's nothing to add a backbone to the beer. If you use lots of malt IMO you need at least a minimum amount of hop and I couldn't taste this minimum amount here. I'd say Spielbacher is a hop monster in comparison. Point made clear? By the way: There are lots of other breweries close to this one: Kreuzwertheim, Marktheidenfeld, Rothenfels (small and beautiful closed brewery but has contract brewed beer), Arnstein, Frammersbach, Lohr, and the beautiful, beautiful tiny brewery at Stadelhofen. Have to visit the last one next - it looked gorgeous! So, that's really a beer island in the beerwise quite deserted Unterfranken. |
