Jason, that's an excellent summary of the current situation. Absolutely right about Zoigl - it is part of a way of life and its present day manifestation is really a logical development. After all, we could hardly expect to be drinking in someone's private kitchen or livinig room nowadays, so the Zoiglstube is a practical development that allows both locals and visitors to take part in an ancient tradition or, at least, a fairly tastelful interpretation of it. Sadly, that's not the case in the UK, from my limited experience, where 'proper pubs seem to be disappearing at a great rate of knots. I wonder about the Wetherspoon's phenomenon - is it a good or a bad development and is it one that we might see one day in Franken? Yes, it's great to be able to sample a range of well-kept beer at low prices but will this, ultimately, kill off all the other pubs struggling to compete? The WSpoons in Llandudno is an amazing place, being situated inside a Victorian theatre (the Palladium) but would I want to be drinking always in this environment, which tends to be noisy and very foody? I think not. |
