Certainly no kids, while 'ladies' were confined to the parlour or lounge, definitely not in the bar or, as we mancunians (and other northerners?) call it, the vault. 'More mature ladies' were at home in the snug. Dogs, of course, yes, there was not much in the way of carpets to think about - or food, except plain crisps and the occasional packet of peanuts. There are some excellent photo's of English pubs in Michael Jackson's 'The English Pub' (don't know whether it is still in print), especially the front inside cover, which is just how I remember the vault 'when I was a lad'! Typical pub games were darts, crib (a card game, if you don't know it) and dominoes. One of my first jobs as a young barman was to collect the crib boards and 'bones' at closing time. Believe me, this was a perilous task - you could easily get the glasses but, to interupt a game of crib or bones, was more than your life was worth! |
