OT: Samuel Smith's

I'm not sure Sam Smiths is quite the model brewery / pub company that is being represented here. Yes, OBB on form is a beautiful traditional bitter than epitomises session drinking, yes it's pubs are fantastic, often architectural gems, pieces of social history, and yes the prices are good. However, having been in many a Sam Smiths pub across the north, midlands and London, I have had so many mixed experiences of the beer quality (OBB) that it begs the question as to thier priorities. On top of this, on nearly as many ocassions I have returned my pint to the bar and been told to 'like it or lump it' and other rubbish such as 'that's what OBB tastes like'. These aren't pints on the turn or a little sharp, I wouldn't even put it on my chips.

A friend of mine actually wrote to the brewery to complain of such an incident we experienced in a Sam Smiths pub in Peterborough, The Botolph Arms, and the company didn't even have the courtesy to respond. Perhaps it's such a common complaint they don't have the manpower to deal with these type of letters. Perhaps they don't care. I had exactly the same treatment in the Princess Louise in Holborn where I was informed by the 'landlady' (the latter is questionable) that I didn't have a clue about beer. I rest my case.

It suggests to me that wastage is very much frowned upon by the powers that be at Sam Smiths and should be avoided by publicans at ALL costs. Don't get me wrong, when OBB's good it's great, but I'd hapily pay more for consistency and some respect.
