Very Bad Hop Harvest Expected |

The heat wave, with 26 days of >30° temperatures since 1 July (8 of which >35°!), will likely devastate this year's hop crop, especially the aroma sorts, according to a piece in yesterday's paper. Of course, that online version is only an edited version of what appeared in hard-copy form. Specifically, details of exactly how the hop plants suffer from and react to excessive heat and drought conditions. (The Nürnberger Nachrichten paper company seems to think it needs to save on text online, but not in printed form...) Anyway, it looks pretty grim. Woe my beloved Polaris! I'll have to revert back to expensive, imported Oregonian Chinooks, I guess. Although, the article claims there won't be a noticable effect on beer prices to consumers, since the amount of hops used in brewing is so small. *face-palm* And it says maybe someone should work on crossing hops with cactus...cactii. Even fields that have been watered (~20%) aren't doing much better than those that haven't, supposedly. |
