Goodbye Eschawo, hello Franken! |

So, yesterday, we bid a sad farewell to the Oberpfalz and journied to Franken. It has been a lovely few weeks in the Zoigl haupstadt, where we made more friends, swam more lengths of the Freibad and drank and learned more about Zoigl. On Friday, we visited the 2 stub'n that were open in Neuhaus - lucky day, 2 to try - Lingl and Bahler. We talked for a while to H. Bauern, proprietor of Lingl, and I asked him how many times per year he brewed (Jimbo, you may recall that we were told that brewers in Neuhaus only brewed twice a year and, consequently, had to use more hops). The answer was 6 or 7, so much for this and most of the other bullshit that we were told on the tour of Eschawo's brauhaus. It was interesting to try a seidla of Bahler Zoigl immediately after one at Lingl: they were really different, althought the wort for both is prepared by H. Witt of Bahler. It just shows how important yeast and conditioning are. On to Seigendorf: we have a really nice and commodious Fewo, with a hospitable host. The only downside is the 3 kms to Hirschaid station, especially in temperatures approaching 40C. But, as we had our Bayern Tikt, we made the effort and went to Forchheim for the evening. What a good decision! It was truly idyllic sitting in the warm sun, drinking excellent Neder beer and listening to a brass band playing outside the alte Rathaus. One little consolation for the 3 kms walk back the apartment is that halfway lies the Haeschaada Kaella (local dialect for Hirschaida Keller). Another delightful experience, drinking excellent Kraus Lagerbier under the trees as the light gradually faded. Another interesting comparison: Kraus Lagerbier is much sweeter than that at Neder, but still very delicious. Unfortunately, the exertions of yesterday were too much and we got up late, thus missing the 990 Freizeit Express, so Schmausen Keller must wait for another day. However, Buttenheim is only 3 kms away, so Lowenbrau Keller should prove an ample consolation after lunch. |
