For anyone in Brittany / going to Brittany, I found what is probably the best beer shop in the region this past weekend. Brasserie Trimartolod is just outside Concarneau, an attractive port (the third largest in France) with a lovely walled old town and the usual tourist crowds. Its near Lorient and Quimper on the South West coast of the Breton penninsular. The brewery has a bar and beer shop and is set in a romantic Z.A. or industrial zone. Their own beers on draft are ok, blonde, blanche and rousse (sound similar to Hell, Dunkel and Weizen?) but the real draw is the extensive bottle range from what seems to be some on the countries most innovative breweries. They keep some of these in a fridge to drink on site. The range is obviously big on Breton but there are numerous beers from all over, pale ales, IPAs, DIPAs, barley wines, imperial stouts... I've probably been in shops with a larger selection but this one seems to be very hand picked, with very few duffers. Prices are ok (it is France) and typically were €3 for a 33cl and €4 for a 500cl - this included some of the bigger ABV beers so on average it's not extortionate, especially with current exchange rates. The folks were very nice and I got a couple of freebies for a bulk purchase, which is always nice. If anyone is in the area I would thoroughly recommend - there is a V&B (Vin et Bieres) in the same ZA, this chain has outlets all over Brittany and beyond and carry a large if less impressive selection which stands out for it's Belgium (Kapittel, St Bernardus, Bush, Carolous etc) and local beers rather than anything mind blowing. They have some German but mainly from the massive breweries. To cap it all off, the shop had a large collection of beer mats across a wall, in amongst I spotted a Mahr's Brau one. The beer world is a small one. |
