Cask Ale in Oregon is mostly |

See my twittering from yesterday regarding the new place in Salem. Sadly, located in a difficult part of town, but happily EXCELLENT ale, if much too strong for me. The locals demand high-strength. One brewer there is from Derby. Another thing about this is, indeed hand-pumped beer has been in decline in Oregon. There seemed to be a hand pump or two at any number of better pubs 20 years ago, but many have disappeared. Just not enough regular turnover led to too much wasted beer. It's not really a matter of deception, it's a matter of not really knowing what "cask-conditioned" really is. As others have said well already, Americans simply don't have the tradition and don't know what it means. I didn't at first. I reckon handpumps appeared here after beer people discovered them whilst visiting the UK and bringing them in to use in their own pubs. But they didn't necessarily have the ability to have ale properly brewed & conditioned for them, so started using them with kegged beer. Better than nothing! In Corvallis myself today. I shall drive to the coast and call in at a brewpub or two...maybe. |
