Then again .... (and Algäuer Beer) |

You've never heard of the Bayern Ticket? Never heard any of us going on about it, even? Can get you from Bayreuth to Salzburg and back in a day for 23€. No ICEs or ICs though, just REs or lower. Then again, I suppose you've not had much use for it, with the VGN TagesticketPlus covering your needs. I found two enjoyable beers during 5 days in deepest, darkest Allgäu last week -- one was actually very good, comparable with the likes of Rittmayer of Aisch. Another was interesting, and a couple of others were drinkable. We were in a treehouse "hotel", conveniently hanging from a tree (no nails or screws used to mount it to the tree, just cables to hang it) on a stream, so that I could easily dump other less- or non-drinkable beers out the window and hear a rewarding "splash". A sort of pilgrimage to the brewery tap of Hirsch Bräu of Sonthofen was hugely disappointing: the draught beers were exceedingly bland except the Bock, and the one I was looking forward to finding on draught was only in bottles for 3.10€ (Holzar), which I wasn't going to pay. I was looking forward to it, because we got the Holzar in Oregon in the late 90's or so and I loved it. A visit to the Irseer Kloster Bräu complex at the monastery was very rewarding, OTOH. I had only heard of the Kloster before, I hadn't even known that there was a brewery. (I assume it's secular.) The Hell was fabulous from the tank, lagered 80 days and unfiltered. The Dunkel was less impressive, and the Bock simply too strong and sweet. Outstanding food, for slightly up-scale Bavarian Brauhaus fare, without giving the impression of cafeteria/cantine like in so many other big beery places. |
