Just back from a week in Bamberg and visited this little gem. Obviously it has been spoken in exhalted terms on the forum and so I thought I'd pay it a visit (a friend drove the hire car that day). I must say that it not only lived up to the hype but went beyond anything I could have imagined. Beautiful old pub on a farm, nothing like I've ever seen in Germany where in my experience even if the exterior is are kept original interiors are constantly modernised. Inside it's like a time warp, of the likes I've only ever seen in some of Britain's heritage pubs, with sloping floor, original beams and a low ceiling. Packed on a Thursday night full of locals eating the excellent home cooked food which I beleive is sourced from the farm itself. The only way I could do the beer justice is to say I downed 4 seidlas in 1.5 hours. It was stunning, not gassy, lovely malt character and oh so drinkble. One of the best German beers I've ever had. I food was also top quality, simple, but no less excellent. Paying was a charming episode whereby one is escorted to the rear of the pub where the matriarch tots up the bill. It was fascinting, and she was more than happy to sell a few bottles and glasses to take away. Anyone who hasn't been and has any chance I urge you to take it, the place is just charming, unique AND it serves great beer and food; yet it remains completely engrossed in the local community. Wonderful, thanks to those who shared on the forum. |
