Last friday I visited a brewery that was on my list for a long time: Brauerei Martin, Hausen, near Schweinfurt. The place is great! Brewmaster Ulrich Martin made his dream come true and reopened old Brauerei Lorenz Fratz that was closed in the 1950s. The brewery tap was carefully restored to 1950s style, no kitsch, no decorations, just beautiful. Ulrich Martin brews Pils, Spezial and Weizen. I'm no Weizen drinker so missed that, but had plenty of Pils and Spezial. Pils: Flowery, not too hoppy (that's typical for franconian Pilseners), good balance. Spezial: Wow! Very spicy, full-bodied, plenty of character! One of the best Spezial beers I had so far. Both beers as old fashioned as the old brewery buildings; don't think any Smaragd, Cascade or Citra was used. ;-) Anybody else who's been there? What do you think about the brewery? I'll surely visit again soon. A new favourite. |
