There's a lot of theories about the way that language is absorbed - including Noam Chomsky's notion of the young brain having a specific L.A.D. - 'language acquistion device'. When I studied this topic many years ago, I rather pooh-pood this idea, but maybe I misunderstood it. However, I tend to think it's more a question that the neuro pathways/connections are more pliable in the young brain during its early development. It's not just language either, I find that I can remember all sorts of things from earlier on - words of songs are a good example of things that seem to stick in the memory, while it takes an age to learn a new song nowadays. But there's also the point that, when you're young, you have more time, and more inclination, to spend time learning. |
