In the complicated world of Zoigl brewing and taxation in Eschawo (complicated because the little village was divided into 3 fiefdoms, each imposing its own taxes), from at least 1672 (and probably a couple of centuries before) the practice was to brew normal beer and 'Kofent', which seems to be a 'small beer' made by cold sparging the once-used wort. From what I can see, the 'Stftische' brewers (i.e. paying tax to Waldsassen monastery) had to pay tax ('Ungeld') on the first beer of around Kr 20 per bucket and Kr 10 on the Kofent. However, those brewing in the area control by the 'Hofmarkt' (local lord) only had to pay Kr 12 per bucket and nothing for the Kofent. As there was only a small stream dividing the territories (if you've been to Eschawo, it's flows outside Wolframstube, behind the properties to the west of the Hauptstrasse and, finally, into the Waldnaab by the Neuhausstr. bridge), this caused great resentment. |
