I learnt that the word "Karfreitag" originates from old German meaning "mournful" Friday or similar. That would make a bit more sense in the context of the Jesus story than "Good Friday". It is one of the "quiet" holidays, on which the playing of music in public places like discos or bars is prohibited, IIRC. Other such holidays are Xmas Eve and 1 November. When I was in England on Xmas Eve, I called in at one pub where they were dancing to a DJ with a snow flake machine. It struck me as a very non-German Xmas Eve. |
