We didn't try to go to Cafe In de Vrede (the Westvleteren café) this trip. We had two days in the area at either end of the trip (meaning one full day, two evenings). It would've been possible on the first trip, but it rained and we weren't in the mood to make a wintery rainy walk there. And we didn't bring our bikes along. The second trip, being the first half of January, saw the café (as well as the bottle sales at the brewery) closed for Betriebsurlaub. We'll do it in summer, sometime. Maybe. And then really only for the 6 & 8, I find the 12 to be vastly over-rated. And I did receive a bottle of the 12 on Monday (for free!) from a chap in the Hommelzack restaurant, who was so happy that we stopped in his town on the way from Engeland to Duitsland that he had to open a six-pack box from the boot of his car for us. He'd gotten that as a Xmas bonus gift from his boss, head of a cooling systems company. It turns out they had just done a big project at the brewery to increase cooling capacity since the brothers are ramping up production. Which is what they supposedly never want to do, right? (Maybe just modernise to save cooling costs & the environment?) Oh, and he gave us a bottle of Leffe too. (Left that in the fridge at the holiday house.) We did bring back a jar of Trappestenbier paté as a gift for the neighbours who kept an eye on our post box for us. And some chocolate. The Canterbury artisAnal cheese (emphasis mine, note proper English pronunciation) we had bought for them...that we forgot in the fridge in the flat in Ramsgate. Drank like a fish there, I did. The ale there was much better than I'd feared, being in the extreme sowf. |
